Useful keyboard shortcuts for windows switchers to Mac


I've recently switched from a PC to mac. One of the things that was the most difficult to get used to were the new keyboard shortcuts for some basic operations that I could perform under windows.

Here is a list of useful keyboard shortcuts for ex-windows users

Text
Move one word: Alt-arrow left or right
Move to the beginning/end of a line: Command-arrow
Select one word: Alt-shift-arrow left or right
Select one line: Command-shift-arrow
Copy text: Command-c
Cut text: Command-x
Paste text: Command-v

Shutdown

Hibernate: Alt-command-eject
Shut down: control-eject
Restart: control-shift-eject

Print screen
Take a picture of the screen and save to file in desktop: Command-shift-3
Take a picture of the selection and save to file in desktop: Command-shift-4
- Hold Spacebar to move selected area.
- Hold Shift to change size in one direction only (horizontal or vertical)
- Hold Option for center-based resizing.

Take a picture of the selected window: Command-shift-4, then space bar
To copy the screen capture to the Clipboard instead of saving it as a file, press Control instead of command

Mac specific
Open Spotlight: Command-space
Open FrontRow: Command-esc

Miscellaneous
Shutdown an app (Control-Alt-Delete): Option-command-esc
Delete a file: select and Command-backspace
